Teen medical ban could threaten gay youth, say advocates:

RALEIGH, N.C. — A bill restricting teenagers’ access to medical and mental health care will be voted on in the North Carolina House of Representatives on Wednesday.

OH MY. THEY ARE NOT LYING. Here is the bill! It is literally requiring all medical services, especially in the sexual health AND mental health sides, to be first approved by parents!

This bill is loaded with lots of unfortunate implications for sexually active teenagers of all stripes. One of many problematic aspects for LGBTQ youth especially is here:

“My biggest fear is for youth who have estranged relationships with their parents,” said James Miller, executive director of the LGBT Center of Raleigh. “I’m concerned with the youth who come to us and who say, ‘I cannot talk to my parents, I cannot talk to a trusted adult, I don’t have a trusted adult in my life.’ This bill really does put a hinderance on youth who need to access mental health or sexual health services.”

Rodney Tucker, executive director of theCharlotte-based Time Out Youth, said his organization’s services will definitely be affected. One of his staff currently has a provisional license for professional counseling and will be required to follow the proposed legislation’s restrictions once the organization is able to offer therapeutic services this fall. At that time, he said, youth under the age of 18 will need parental consent for Time Out Youth’s counseling.

“We have big concerns on delaying of treatment, increase risk of spreading disease, how this could impact depression/suicide,” Tucker said in a statement via email. “Our youth have very few safe places, this law would change the patient client relationship with their medical provider.”

U.S. regulators on Tuesday approved the Plan B One-Step emergency contraception for sale to girls and women ages 15 and older without a prescription and on store shelves instead of behind pharmacy counters, Food and Drug Administration officials announced.

Morning-after pill available over the counter to all ages in US

USA TODAY: A federal judge in New York has ordered the Food and Drug Administration to make the “morning-after” pill available over the counter and without prescription to girls of all ages.

The ruling overturns a decision in 2011 by Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius which barred over-the-counter sales of the controversial pill to girls under 17. Sebelius’ decision itself had overruled an FDA recommendation to widen availability.

April is STD Awareness Month! Regular testing is important; now’s a great time to get yourself tested (and encourage your partner to do so as well!) if you’ve been lax about it in the past.

Just an update on my period being 10 days late: Being the paranoid person I am, I went to PP anyway and took another test with a neg. result. The OBGYN told me that I was probably stressing about it too much and gave me some birth control pills to regulate it when I finally got it. The pills are only $18 a month, which is AMAZING. I felt like someone finally cared and I wasn't so stressed about it anymore. Needless to say, I got my period today. Thank you, and Fuck Yeah, Planned Parenthood.

I'm a fifteen year old girl who is currently living in Ireland. And I'm scared. My parents are devoted Catholic and I so much as whisper the word "abortion" they'll lecture me of its wrongness. If I'm ever raped and impregnated I can't seek abortion here - how crazy is that? I would be forced to continue on with pregnancy or travel to England. This is a serious issue and I just want to thank everyone who is supporting the pro-choice people in Ireland. We really need to get this issue over with.

That answer to the last ask is total crap. My friend had 2 false periods and ended up actually being pregnant. I would go down to PP or my doctor just to make sure.

The person who asked that question also had two negative pregnancy tests. I would venture to say that after two negative tests and their period coming, they don’t need to worry about being pregnant. If they would like to go to Planned Parenthood for a third test they are of course more than welcome to and will receive the service for low cost.

My period is 10 days late. The last time I had sex was in January but I have already had a period since then (that one was 9 days late). I've been really paranoid about the situation, so I went on the PP chat on their website and the woman said it's impossible for me to be pregnant.Just in case, I took two tests, and they both read negative. This is the latest my period has ever been. Should I physically go to Planned Parenthood and see what's going on? Or should I trust the woman from the chat?

The clearest trend on the map is the dearth of clinics through the center of the country—from northern Texas through Kansas, Nebraska, South Dakota, Wyoming, and North Dakota. Roughly 400,000 women of reproductive age (between 15 and 44) live more than 150 miles from the closest clinic in this region. The county farthest away from an abortion clinic is Divide, N.D. All of these states except Wyoming require 24-hour waiting periods between the time a woman schedules an abortion and the procedure.

Does your state suck at reproductive rights? Find out!

Tired of all those election maps? Here’s a new map to look at.

This one shows grades given to the 50 states for their progressiveness (or regressiveness) on reproductive health and rights. A report card put out by the Population Institute ranks states on availability of birth control, rates of unintended and teen pregnancy, access to emergency contraception and abortion, and sex-ed policy.

The worst state in the union? That would be Mississippi, which scores an F-. Eight other states failed too: Arizona, Florida, Louisiana, Nebraska, Nevada, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Tennessee.

On the bright side: Go left coast! Washington state wins top honors with the only A+ in the union, while California and Oregon get straight-up A’s. (Not that the West Coast states are perfect. Looks like there’s some grading on a curve here.)

The report outlines the ongoing “political assault” on reproductive rights:

While Congress has rejected efforts by social conservatives to defund Title X, [the federal program that provides low-income and uninsured individuals in the U.S. with access to birth control and other preventive healthcare services,] several states have slashed their funding for family planning clinics, and, rejecting the overwhelming weight of research findings, many states are promoting abstinence education in lieu of proven comprehensive sex education curricula. Many states are adopting abortion curbs and other restrictions that are forcing the closure of family planning clinics. Several states are debating “personhood’ amendments to their constitutions that would potentially criminalize all abortions and restrict access to several forms of hormonal birth control.

That unimpressive record earns the country as a whole a C-.

I’m from Arkansas, which tells you why I’m so passionate about reproductive rights and sex education. I definitely didn’t get it here.
